Congratulations to all the veteran fencers who travelled from as far away as New Jersey and Pennsylvania to participate in the Tom Wright Memorial Veteran Fencing Tournament, hosted by the Capitol Division and held at DC Fencers Club on Sunday, November 4, 2012. The tournament included combined mixed events (men and women of all ratings) in epee, foil, and sabre. The top performers in each men’s and women’s event have their name engraved on the trophies, which are displayed at the club.
The Tom Wright Memorial Veteran Fencing Tournament honors Tom Wright, who fenced sabre at Harvard, graduating in 1941. He had a distinguished career as an architect in Washington D.C. and returned to fencing at the NIH club in the 1990’s while in his 70’s. He competed in England on one of the first USA Veteran teams before World Veteran Championships were officially recognized. His love of fencing led him to arrange demonstration matches at Washington's Cosmos Club.
Veteran fencing continues to grow in popularity with veteran category (40 and up) tournaments hosted by fencing clubs nationwide, and national vet events held several times a year by USA Fencing. Team USA’s veteran fencing contingent garnered multiple medals at the 2012Veteran World Fencing Championships held in Austria last month.
Unlike many sports, fencing can be practiced by those in their 60s, 70s, and up. Many fencing clubs offer beginner classes for all ages, including a Saturday afternoon all-ages/all-levels class at DC Fencers Club.
Full results are on askfred.net. A video of the epee final will be posted on DC Fencers Club's YouTube Channel shortly, and a photo album of the event is available on our Facebook page.
