A salute to all our DCFC fencers on bringing your best game to the 2012 Richard F. Oles Memorial Charm City Classic, held on December 1-2, 2012 at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Special congratulations to Peter Souders on his gold medal in Men's Sabre, and Reed Srere who also medaled in that event. Congratulations also to Brooke Sirico and Valerie Asher on winning silver and bronze in Women's Epee at the Richard F. Oles Memorial Charm City Classic.
The event was recently renamed in honor of Richard Oles, a keystone member of the Baltimore fencing community. According to a Baltimore Sun story, Dick Oles became Johns Hopkins Blue Jays head coach in 1959 and held the position until he retired in 2003. During his tenure at Hopkins, Oles' tutelage produced "at least 70 percent of the fencing coaches in Baltimore," Michael Oles estimated. In 1961, Dick Oles established the Tri-Weapon Boys' Club at the old Central YMCA to train teens in the sport. He then founded the Salle Palasz for adults who were interested in learning how to fence. His Tri-Weapon Boys' Club developed eight national youth champions.
