DCFC remembers Professor Zbigniew Czajkowski
DC Fencers Club mourns the loss of Professor Zbigniew Czajkowski, who passed away on February 8, 2019, three days after his 98th birthday. Maestro Czajkowski was known as the “Father of the Polish School” of fencing, and we honor his many achievements as a fencer, war hero, scholar, author, fencing champion, and coach of national, world, and Olympic champions.
Since 1980, Czajkowski directed the Fencing Department at the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, where he taught more than 100 fencing masters, among them DCFC Head Coach Janusz Smolenski.
In fencing, the teacher-student relationship is both immediate and part of a centuries-old transfer of knowledge. We join the fencing community in honoring Maestro Czajkowski’s immense contributions to our sport, and extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
