‘FENCES WITH WOLVES’ YOUTH FUNDRAISER TOURNAMENT AT DC FENCERS CLUB
DCFC youth member organizes fencing tournament to benefit Yellowstone wolves
Youth fencers from clubs near and far are invited to battle for the title of Alpha Wolf at “Fences With Wolves,” a youth tournament held Sunday, June 3, 2012 at DC Fencers Club in Silver Spring, MD. “Fences With Wolves” is a fundraiser for the Wolf Project of the Yellowstone Park Foundation.
“I have always been interested in wolves, and I learned about the Yellowstone Wolf Project when I visited the park with my family last summer,” said tournament organizer Jacob Asher. The wolf, which is an integral member of the wilderness ecosystem, was reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995. Proceeds from the tournament will help track the travel habits of the 91 wolves now living in the park.
Participants in this youth fundraiser are encouraged (but not required) to seek sponsors to support the cause. Sponsorship forms, allowing sponsors to pledge per point scored, will be emailed to preregistrants. After the competition, sponsors will receive an email with their pledge amount and a link for online donation. Supporters who don’t know youth fencers but would like to participate can either email to be assigned a competitor to pledge, or they can sign up directly at DC Fencers Club.
Wolf-themed prizes will be awarded to medalists, as well as a prize in each age group for the fencer with the greatest number of sponsors. In addition, the top four finishers in each age group will receive gift certificates for ice cream, courtesy of tournament sponsor the Tropical Ice Cream Cafe, located less than a mile from DCFC on Georgia Avenue. Fencers and their supporters also will receive a special commemorative wristband. A tournament bake sale will also support the cause.
The tournament will feature a Youth 12 Mixed Epee event, and a Youth 14 Mixed Epee event, which is currently a “C1” rated event. The registration fee is $35 for preregistered fencers and $45 at the door. A portion of tournament fees will go directly to the Yellowstone Wolf Project. To pre-register for the tournament, go to askfred.net and for more information on the “Fences With Wolves” fundraiser, visit the Yellowstone Park Foundation website.
About fencing tournaments
Fencing competitions in all three weapons usually consist of two rounds of bouting. In the first round of “pools,” six to eight fencers compete in a round-robin of 5-touch/3 minute bouts. Pool results inform the seeding of the next round, Direct Elimination or “DE.” Direct elimination bouts are 15 touch/9 minute bouts. Winners of each DE round advance to the table of 64, 32, 16, semifinals, and finals.
DC Fencers Club Summer Camps and Beginner Classes
Each generation of fencing champions gets its start in a beginner fencing class. This July and August, DCFC offers six separate week-long summer fencing camps for beginners ages eight and up. DC Fencers club also hosts ongoing beginner fencing classes on weekdays, weeknights, and Saturdays, including beginner classes for youth, daytime classes for homeschoolers, and an all-ages/levels fencing class. Equipment is provided for beginners. For more information on getting involved in this Olympic sport, call 301-562-1990 or email .
