DC FENCERS CLUB MEMBERS HIT THE JACKPOT WITH EIGHT MEDALS AT THE MARCH NORTH AMERICAN CUP IN RENO, NEVADA

(SILVER SPRING, MD) — Over St. Patrick's Day weekend, DC Fencers Club members found their pot of gold at the March North American Cup in Reno, Nevada.  DCFC members took eight medals at this national event which brought together more than 1,000 fencers from across the country.  The March North American Cup (NAC) included Veteran (athletes ages 40 and older), Division II, Division III and Wheelchair events in all three weapons – epee, foil, and sabre.

James Cameron (Silver Spring, MD) won the gold medal in Division III Men's Sabre.   This is Cameron's second national medal of the season.  He was also a member of the Junior Men's Sabre Team that took the bronze at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in February 2013 in Baltimore, MD.

Veteran Fencer Jim Adams (Rockville, MD) is a three-weapon fencer who hit the trifecta in Reno.  Adams won silver in Vet 70 Men's Sabre, and bronze in both Vet 70 Men's Epee, and Vet 70 Men's Foil.   These are Adams' latest wins in a successful season that includes medals in foil and sabre at the December 2012 North American Cup in Milwaukee.

Fellow three-weapon teammate Peter Calderon won bronze in Vet 70 Men's Sabre, silver in Vet 70 Men's Epee, and a top 8 spot (6) in Vet 70 Men's Foil.

Valerie Asher (Bethesda, MD) won silver medal in Vet 50 Women's Epee.  With this win, Asher is a step closer to qualiyfing for her third trip to the Veteran World Championships.  At the 2012 'Vet Worlds,' Asher took the Bronze in Vet 50 Women's Epee at the premiere international fencing tournament for fencers 50 and over.

About fencing tournaments

Fencing competitions in all three weapons usually consist of two rounds of bouting. In the first round of “pools,” six to eight fencers compete in a round-robin of 5-touch/3 minute bouts. Pool results inform the seeding of the next round, Direct Elimination or “DE.” Direct elimination bouts are 15 touch/9 minute bouts. Winners of each DE round advance to the table of 64, 32, 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.

The 2012-13 national fencing season includes several North American Cups, the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships, and  the season culminates with USA Fencing National Championships, June 28 – July 7, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio.  In April, Richmond, VA, hosts the Division I and Wheelchair National Championships and a North American Cup for fencers in the Youth 10, 12, and 14 age categories.

Beginner fencing classes and summer fencing camps

Each generation of fencing champions gets its start in a beginner fencing class.  This July, DCFC offers four week-long summer fencing camps for beginners ages seven and up.  This Spring, DC Fencers club hosts several beginner fencing classes on weekdays, weeknights, and Saturdays, including beginner classes for youth, and an all-ages/levels fencing class.  Equipment is provided for beginners.  For more information on getting involved in this Olympic sport, call 301-562-1990 or email .
