Bowie, Md. Fencer wins team bronze in Barcelona
DC Fencers Club member and Bowie, Md. resident Amanda Sirico helped Team USA win bronze over 2016 Olympic champions Team Romania, (28-20), at the Barcelona Women’s Epee World Cup in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday, February 11. Also on the bronze winning team, Capitol Division member and 2016 Rio Olympian Kat Holmes, and 2012 London Olympic team bronze medalists Kelley and Courtney Hurley of Texas.
“I had a lot of fun fencing and sharing experience with my Olympian teammates,” said Sirico, who is eyeing a spot on the #Tokyo2020 team. Sirico, 22 years old, is the #6 ranked women’s epee fencer in the United States. In May, she travels to her next World Cup in Cali, Colombia.
Sirico is a member of DC Fencers Club (DCFC), where she trains with Head Coach Janusz Smolenski. For 28 years, Smolenski has coached many fencers to top results at U.S. National Championships, North American Cups, and international events. Sirico and Holmes are just two of many elite fencers from the Washington, D.C. region, a growing fencing powerhouse.
