Helen Jolley and Amanda Sirico in the semifinals, epee event, at the tenth annual Amazon Open
June 11, 2013
The tenth annual Amazon Open was a rousing success. On June 9, nearly seventy women warriors travelled from as far as Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta, and Philadelphia to compete in the epee and sabre events. DC Fencers Club thanks Valerie Asher, who founded the Amazon Open ten years ago. Valerie, we salute your vision and your dedication to fostering women's fencing.
A tournament this big doesn't happen by itself. Meet manager Alan Arrowsmith oversaw the event, bout committee staff members Lewis Sloter and Christina Giblin ran the competition tables, more than 10 referees officiated the bouts, and USA Fencing Secretary Bradley Baker was on hand as part of a related referee training clinic (see more below).
The Amazon Open epee event featured 57 women warriors whose combined talents and ratings turned this into an A2 event. The Amazon Open is known as one of the strongest women's epee tournaments in the mid-Atlantic. The sabre event drew competitors including three-time Veteran World Champion sabreuse Delia Turner.

To the victor go the spoils! The top four in the epee and sabre events received gift certificates from Absolute Fencing and artisan jewelry by local artist Robin Markowitz of SDJ designs.
Referee Clinic
As more fencers compete in tournaments, more trained referees are needed to officiate. On June 8-9, the Capitol Division of USA Fencing hosted a referee clinic with Bradley Baker, who is coach of the Temple University Fencing Team coach and an internationally rated referee in epee, sabre, and foil.

Thanks to the 28 fencers, parents, and fencing fans who took part in the training program. You are helping grow our sport! Congratulations to DC Fencers Club fencers who earned referee ratings this weekend. Jacob Asch – 7 sabre; Nathan Bailey – 7 epee; Corwin Duncan – 5 epee, 9 sabre; Andrew Nosil – 8 epee; Julian Raul- 8 epee; David Ruskin – 8 epee, 8 sabre; and Meghan Sirico – 8 epee.
