Captain Steere Memorial Tournament Results
Thanks to all who joined us for the Captain Steere Memorial Tournament, held at DC Fencers Club today, Sunday, May 20.
This yearly event honors Captain Richard Steere, a retired Navy Captain who served as meteorologist for General George S. Patton during the Anglo-American landing in North Africa in 1942, and later predicted weather patterns for the invasion of Normandy, France (also known as “D-Day”).
While at the Naval Academy, Captain Steere was on a fencing team, and after his graduation in 1931, he earned a spot on the U.S. Men’s Foil Team which won bronze at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Before and after his retirement from the Navy in 1961, he was a fixture at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he fenced with and taught young midshipmen.
Steere fenced into his late 70s and won various titles of the Amateur Fencers League of America, which became the United States Fencing Association.
