DC FENCERS CLUB HOSTS AMAZON OPEN WOMEN’S FENCING TOURNAMENT

Epee and Sabre events featured at one of the strongest women’s tournaments in the Mid-Atlantic

On Sunday, June 10, 2012, DC Fencers Club will host the ninth annual Amazon Open Fencing Tournament. This women’s only event features contests in both epee and sabre. The Amazon Open is one of the strongest women’s epee tournaments in the mid-Atlantic, and typically draws fencers from all over the country.

“Fencing is a challenging sport, and it’s important to offer women competitive opportunities among their peers,” said tournament organizer and DCFC member Valerie Asher. “The Amazon Open is one way to encourage more women – both young, and young at heart – to pursue this wonderful sport."

Medals will be awarded down to 8th place. The top four finishers will receive special prizes. Absolute Fencing, which manufactures and supplies fencing gear for the recreational to competitive fencer, is sponsoring the Amazon Open, and will provide gift certificates to the top four competitors.

As an “open” tournament, the Amazon welcomes women in all age categories (from Y-14 to veterans 40 and up) and in all ratings categories (from “A” rated fencers to unrated fencers). The format consists of two rounds of bouting. In the first round of pools, six to eight fencers compete in a round-robin of 5-touch/3 minute bouts. Pool results inform the seeding of the next round, Direct Elimination or “DE.” Direct elimination bouts are 15 touch/9 minute bouts. Winners of each DE round advance to the table of 64, 32, 16, semifinals, and finals.

The male fencers of the Capitol and Maryland Divisions continue to support this event as meet managers and referees.

Amazon Open IX takes place on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at DC Fencers Club, 9330 Fraser Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Registration for Senior Women’s Epee closes at 9:30 am, for Senior Women’s Sabre at 2:00 pm. The entry fee is $35 per event if registered in advance and $45 at the door. Find out who else is competing and save on your fees by pre-registering on www.askfred.net.
