DC Fencers Club sends 31 youth fencers to compete in Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Baltimore
#1 ranked U.S. Cadet epee fencer Amanda Sirico (Bowie, MD) to compete at this national event
WHAT: DC Fencers Club (Silver Spring, MD) is sending 31 young fencers to compete in 12 events at the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships , held in Baltimore, MD from February 15 – 18 at the Baltimore Convention Center. More than 1,500 top ranked youth fencers will compete at this national event. The competition includes men’s and women’s events in three different weapons (foil, epee, and sabre) and two age groups (cadet [under 17] and junior [under 20]). Twelve individual championships will be contested as well as six team championships. This is the final event of the season to select teams for Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships, which will be held in April in Porec, Croatia.
The Washington-Baltimore area has a very active fencing community with thirty clubs offering training to both youth and adult fencers. Local fencers have represented the United States at World Championships in all categories: Cadet, Junior, Senior, and Veteran.
Among the fencers competing in Baltimore is Amanda Sirico (Bowie, MD), the #1 ranked Cadet Epee Fencer in the United States, and the #6 ranked U.S. fencer in Junior Women’s Epee. Sirico trains at DC Fencers Club in Silver Spring, MD. In the last 5 months alone, Sirico had won gold and silver at three international cadet/junior fencing events.
