DCFC sends three members to compete at the 2013 Veteran World Championships in Bulgaria

Today is the opening ceremony of the Veteran World Fencing Championships in Varna, Bulgaria. Over the next six days, this city on the Black Sea will host the most dedicated, passionate, and hard working group of competitive fencers on the planet.
DCFC sends our heartiest well wishes to members Kaz Campe, Jim Adams, and Peter Calderon, who are among 63 vet fencers representing Team USA at Vet Worlds. Kaz and Peter will compete in Vet 70 Men’s Epee, Peter will also compete in Men’s Sabre, and Jim will compete in Vet 70 Men’s Foil.
In a year of “firsts” for fencing, it’s worth noting that 15 years before US foilist Miles Champley-Watson became the first US male to win a senior world championship title, Kaz Campe made history as the first American male to win a world champion title when he won the Veteran Men's 60+ Epee event at the 1998 Veteran Worlds in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. This is Kaz’s twelfth trip to Vet Worlds. Jim Adams has medaled five times at Vet Worlds, including bronze in Vet 70 Men’s Foil at the 2012 Vet Worlds in Krems, Austria.
The DC area is sending a wealth of competitors to the 2013 Vet Worlds. Capitol Division member Bettie Graham represents Team USA in Vet 70 Women’s Epee and Foil.

The Veteran's World Championship is conducted by the International Fencing Federation. Competitors have included Olympic and Senior World Champion gold medalists. Campe, Adams, Calderon, and other Team USA members were selected based on their best two out of three results from the 2012-2013 season.
Fencing is a lifelong sport, and the Veteran World Championships reflect fencing’s ability to engage athletes of all ages. In 2013, the FIE celebrates its 100th birthday with the theme of “100 years of excellence and innovation.” The Veteran World Champoinships is one of those innovations, this year marking its 17th edition.
