DC FENCERS CLUB U19 SABRE TEAM WINS GOLD AT USA FENCING NORTH AMERICAN CUP

Washington, DC – DC Fencers Club (DCFC) announces the gold medal victory of its Under 19 (U19) Men’s Sabre team at the July North American Cup, a major fencing competition held in conjunction with USA Fencing National Championships on July 1-10 in Reno, Nevada. The DCFC U19 team members are Michael Josephs (Chevy Chase, Md.), Dylan Yui (Takoma Park, Md.), Eugene Chung (Olney, Md.) and Reed Srere (Washington, D.C.), coached by DCFC sabre coach Dariusz Gilman.

The U19 sabre event took place on Saturday, July 2 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.  The DCFC team emerged from a competitive field of 24 U19 sabre teams from fencing clubs around the country.  In a dramatic finals bout against Hristov-Csikany Fencers of Carmichael, CA, the DC Fencers team took an early lead, but Hristov-Csikany clawed back when team anchor John Hallsten scored 13 touches in a single bout.  The next three bouts were point-for-point, until the final bout, where DCFC anchor Michael Josephs won six touches against Hallston’s four, giving the DCFC team a 45-44 win and the title of National U19 Sabre Team Champions.

More than 40 DCFC fencers are competing in Reno during this series of major fencing competitions hosted by USA Fencing from July 1-10.  These events include the Summer National Championships, a July North American Cup, and the Pan Am Zonals, which is one of the paths to the London 2012 Olympics.  Nearly 3,500 fencers of all ages —  from preteens to septuagenarians —  have gathered in Reno to compete in team and individual fencing events in epee, foil and sabre.
