Jacob Asch, of Alexandria, Virginia won gold in the Cadet Men’s Sabre at the world’s largest youth fencing event last weekend at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor (MD).  Asch, 16, was among 40 DC Fencers Club youth competitors at the event.  The 2014 Capitol Clash is the world’s largest all youth fencing tournament with more than more than 1,000 fencers who competed in Youth 10, 12, 14 and Cadet (under 17) age categories in all three weapons (foil, epee, and sabre).

Asch, a sophomore at T.C. Williams High School, was seeded second out of pools and in the Direct Elimination bracket, he garnered a series of solid wins from the Table of 64 straight through the finals (15-2, 15-8, 15-11, 15-6, 15-4, and 15-10).  “The 15-11 bout [against Christian Fernandes of Nellya Fencers, Atlanta] was the toughest bout of the day. That guy can move his feet!’  Asch was awed by the size of the event.  “It was surprising to see the amount of people sign up for Cadet Men’s Sabre,” said Asch.  Asch is ranked #15 in the U.S. for Cadet Men’s Sabre.

Now in its fifth year, the Capitol Clash is one of 11 Super Youth Circuit fencing tournaments held around the country. These events were initiated by the U.S. Fencing Association to provide more competitive opportunities for youth fencers in the Y14, Y12 and Y10 age categories. Super Youth Circuit competitions are part of the qualification paths for Summer Nationals and Youth 10 and 12 events at North American Cups.  All net proceeds from the Capitol Clash go to the National Fencing Foundation, which awards needs and merits based fencing scholarships to advance the sport and create learning and leadership opportunities for those who otherwise would not have them.
