Strong women and strong fencing at the Amazon Open XIII
A grand salute to Valerie Asher, who organized the thirteenth annual Amazon Open at DC Fencers Club this Sunday. Through persistent planning, partnerships, and outreach, Valerie has developed this event into one of the strongest women’s fencing competitions on the East Coast. How strong is it? Fencers travel from as far as Cleveland and Boston to support women’s competitive fencing. As Valerie said in her opening remarks, “to paraphrase ‘Field of Dreams,’ ‘if you build it, they will come.;”
In addition to dedicated fencers from far away, we had a special guest referee, Mary Frye, Vice Chair of the Fencing Officials Commission.
A special thanks to our meet manager Lewis Sloter, Katelyn Keegan, who ran bout committee, and our nattily dressed squad of referees, Valerie’s mother for the fabulous gifts, and our friends and families for your support.
Thanks to all the fencers who showed up and gave it their best, and a special salute to the following fencers who took top eight spots in the epee and sabre events.
