THREE MUSKETEERS MOVIE FANS CAN LIVE THE DREAM AT DC FENCERS CLUB
Fencing clubs around the country welcome swashbucklers from 8 to 80
You watch the swashbuckler movie. You live vicariously through the epic swordfight scenes. It doesn’t have to end there.
You, too, can move beyond rapier wit to actual rapiers by taking a class at a fencing club near you. Learn the ancient art of fencing and join the band of merry — and cunning — swordsmen and women. Through fencing, children, teens, and adults of all ages and athletic abilities can get a challenging mind and body workout.
Fencing fast facts:
- When Alexandre Dumas wrote The Three Musketeers in 1844, he was also a practicing fencer.
- Modern sport fencing consists of competition in three weapons: foil, epee, and sabre.
- In epee, the entire body is the target. The epee is based on the rapier, the traditional dueling weapon seen brandished in movies like The Three Musketeers.
- The target area in sabre, a cavalry weapon, is from the waist up. No ungentlemanly cuts to your opponent’s legs, or you might hurt his horse!
- Fencing is often called “physical chess” due to the interplay of strategy, agility, and control.
- Fencing is one of only four sports to be included in every modern Olympic Games since the first in 1896.
- There are more than 22,000 actively competitive fencers registered with USA Fencing, the national fencing association. Approximately 100,000 people of all ages fence recreationally at high schools, college clubs and NCAA fencing teams, health clubs, fencing clubs, and community centers nationwide.
The duel-curious are welcome at fencing clubs all across the United States. Find a fencing club by visiting USA Fencing, the national fencing association, at www.usfencing.org and click on the “find a club” tool.
