Vet fencers shine at December NAC
Vet power was in full force at the December 2019 North American Cup, held December 6-9 in Salt Lake City, Utah. This NAC featured events in Division I, II, Senior Team, and was also the first of three national events for veteran fencers (40 and up) of the season. DCFC Fencers took medals in multiple events.
DCFCers competed in multiple categories. We give a special salute to veterans who shone at this event, demonstrating the spirit of sport in their dedication, training, camaraderie, and perseverance.
We congratulate Jim Adams who was a triple medalist in foil, epee, and sabre in the Vet 80 men’s category.
We also salute Kaz Campe, who faced Jim in the gold medal Vet 80 Men’s Epee match, the same day that he took a top 16 (14) in Vet 70 Men’s Epee.
Valerie Asher announced her arrival in the Vet 60 category with gold in the women’s epee event, besting multiple Vet World Champion Liz Kocab to take the NAC Champion title. Brava, Valerie!
Marie Lawson, who has been waiting to join the “baby vet” cadre, quickly made her mark with a silver in Vet Women’s Epee and bronze in Vet 40 Women’s Epee. Way to go, Marie!
Valerie and Marie also joined Christina Gordet and Nicole Polinachka Quinlan to take gold in Senior Team Women’s Epee. These vets showed the young gals who is boss!
The ever efficient multitasker Laura Johnson took off her bout committee cap, put on the sabre mask and took fifth place in Vet Women’s Sabre. Well done!
Dick Richards earned a top eight medal (fifth place) in Vet 60 Men’s Epee.
Jeff Snider got double hardware, with silver in Veteran Men’s Epee, and sixth place in Vet 40 Men’s Epee.
Bravo to all our fencers who showed up and fought their best!
We also thank Coach Byron, who guided many of our fencers to great success at this competition.
We also thank USA Fencing for providing Facebook livestreams of the finals matches. It was a thrill to cheer on our clubmates in real time, and to have the video for future viewing.
